Documenting a Day

A typical day in my life: 2020

Due to the ongoing global pandemic, my days look slightly different than they would have, however in this writing I will provide the most accurate and detailed description of my days.

1.     My days start off between 7am and 8:30 am with my son waking up.  My wife works early shift (typically out of the house by 6:30, and home around 4:00pm) and I work a mid-shift (11:30-8:30pm) so I take care of our son in the mornings and spend my quality time with him.  I don’t ever set an alarm clock because his waking up will wake me.

2.     I go into his room, change his diaper, and take him out of his pajamas.

3.     We go downstairs where I will turn on a show he likes, either Blue’s Clues or Paw Patrol, and make him a 10-ounce bottle of milk to drink.

4.     We will watch his shows and he drinks his bottle, then we get on the ground and play with his toys, walk around the house (11 month old’s favorite thing to do) and make a big mess.

5.     I then put him in his high-chair, prepare a morning breakfast for him, and break it into small pieces of bit-size chunks.

6.     After I prepare his daily meals for daycare (2 10 oz bottles, two packs of pureed food, and some fruits and veggies) I load him and his things into the car, driving him to his daycare a half-mile from the house.

7.     Once he is dropped off, I have 30 minutes before I begin work, so I prepare myself some lunch, go downstairs to my home-office, and start booting my workstation for the day.

8.     Around 11:30am EST we have our daily huddle where we discuss roles for the day between the team and bring up any relevant information that needs to be discussed.  At 11:45 we receive handoff from our European counterparts and begin our day.

9.     At this point the day can vary drastically from completely swapped to downright slow.  I work as a global datacenter technician, so our work is based off of need.  On a typical day I will work as many tickets as I can that come in (if I am on flex that day), run the team’s mailbox (if I am on mail that day), scrub all of our active tickets (if I am on scrub that day), or address any number of multiteam “work windows” that we might have scheduled.

10.  Around 4:30pm when my wife is home and showered, I will take my lunch and go pick my son up from school and spend my lunch time with my family.

11.  Around 7pm my wife starts to feed him dinner, and around 7:45 takes him up for his bath where I will typically take a 15 minute break to go spend time with them.

12.  Around 8:30 pm my handoff to our Asia counterparts is over and I head upstairs and hang out with my son for another 10-15 minutes and then kiss him goodnight.

13.  At this point I take a shower, and get ready for bed, spend some time with my wife (I’ll read while she watches shows, or we will enjoy a show together), then fall asleep and do it all over again tomorrow.
